Work is expected to begin this spring on repairs to the Malahat after November’s historically heavy rains washed out part of the road at Tunnel Hill.

Opportunities to bid on the project close April 22.

The job includes dismantling and disposing of about 80 metres of the existing retaining wall and replacing it with a 100-metre-long wall to stabilize the slope in case of any future extreme weather events, the province said Monday. Drainage improvements are also being carried out.

The work will take place about 1.2 kilometres north of Highway 1’s intersection with Finlayson Arm Road, and includes restoring about 50 metres of the northbound lane.

This is the first permanent repair project after the rain damage to go to tender.

Efforts will be made to minimize traffic disruptions during peak travel times and to work overnight when possible, the province said, but traffic delays are expected throughout construction, including periods of single-lane alternating traffic and short, intermittent full closures.
