Pedestrian hit in Nanaimo, airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries

A pedestrian was airlifted to a hospital in Victoria with life-threatening injuries after being struck be a vehicle in Nanaimo Tuesday.

Nanaimo RCMP said the woman in her 50s was hit about 11:15 p.m. in the 200-block of Nicol Street.

Ambulance paramedics took her to hospital in Nanaimo, where it was decided to send her to Victoria.

The driver, a man in his 40s, remained at the scene. Drugs and alcohol have been ruled out as factors.

Police have determined the vehicle involved was southbound on Nicol when the incident occurred. The victim was attempting to cross the four-lane roadway in an area where there was no designated crosswalk.

The roadway closed for about three hours while the scene was examined. The vehicle was seized for investigative purposes.

Police are asking witnesses and anyone with dashcam video from the area at the time of the incident to call Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345.
