A 48-year-old Langford woman died after being hit by a car while crossing Goldstream Avenue in Langford Thursday.

About 8:20 a.m., West Shore RCMP, Langford Fire and B.C. Ambulance paramedics rushed to the 1100-block of Goldstream Avenue, near Langford Lake just south of Wenger Terrace, and found the woman seriously injured. A 2003 Nissan Murano, driven by a 50-year-old Kamloops man, was coming down a hill on a blind corner when the woman was struck.

She was taken to Victoria General Hospital in critical condition by B.C. Ambulance paramedics. The driver remained at the scene and was extremely distraught.

“The female pedestrian unfortunately has succumbed to her injuries,” said West Shore RCMP Cpl. Kathy Rochlitz. “This is an unfortunate accident that will have a significant impact to many. We will continue to investigate the factors to try and bring the family some answers.”

The name of the victim had not been released.

Goldstream Avenue was closed in both directions for three hours between the Trans-Canada Highway off-ramp to Spencer Road.

Traffic analysts interviewed the driver and are looking into whether the sun glare blinded the driver, preventing him from seeing the woman. RCMP did not say whether the woman was walking on the shoulder or crossing the road.

Although still in the preliminary stages, the investigation has not found alcohol or drug use, on the part of the driver or pedestrian, to be factors in the collision.

The B.C. Coroners Service was investigating at the scene.
