An Air Canada passenger on a Toronto-bound flight from Victoria on Monday reported finding what appears to be a sewing needle in a prepared sandwich served on board.
Air Canada spokesman Peter Fitzpatrick said as soon as the discovery was made, the airline contacted the catering company that provides prepared food for its flights.
"A full investigation is underway," Fitzpatrick said, in an email. "We are working closely with our caterers to ensure heightened security measures have been put in place."
Air Canada says it has not received reports of similar incidents.
"Safety is always our top priority so we are taking this matter very seriously," Fitzpatrick said.
"As soon as we were made aware, we immediately contacted the caterers."
Air Canada is co-operating fully with the police investigation, Fitzpatrick said.
Last month, Dutch police investigated how needles got into six turkey sandwiches on Delta Air Lines flights from Amsterdam to the U.S. cities of Minneapolis, Seattle and Atlanta, the Associated Press reported. Passengers discovered four of the needles.
