A group of anti-maskers protested in a downtown march on Saturday afternoon.

Victoria police were on hand to keep watch over the event, saying that they were aware of it beforehand.

Protesters disputing provincial health and safety rules did not wear masks.

Police said they earlier contacted event organizers to say they expected the protest to be safe and peaceful.

On Feb. 10, the province’s gatherings and events order was amended to recognize protests. Police do not have the ability to enforce orders for face-coverings in outdoor settings, the department said on social media.

Police said that they would wear masks and attend the rally from a distance.
