One dead, another injured after single-vehicle crash on Trans-Canada near Cobble Hill

Detours are available

Police are looking for witnesses and dash-camera footage of a single-vehicle crash in Cobble Hill Sunday morning that resulted in the death of a Victoria woman and sent another person to hospital.

A Shawnigan Lake RCMP officer was flagged down about 7 a.m., moments after the crash near the intersection of the Trans-Canada Highway and Fisher Road.

Ambulance paramedics and firefighters responded and began performing first-aid on the blue Nissan’s two occupants, but the passenger did not survive. The driver of the vehicle was transported to hospital for treatment of serious injuries, and was in stable condition.

The investigation is still in its initial stages, but it’s believed that the car was travelling northbound when its passenger side struck a left-turn traffic signal. The vehicle slid down the highway approximately 100 metres, then struck a barrier and came to rest against it.

The highway was closed for about five hours on the 4.2-kilometre stretch between Cobble Hill and Mill Bay while police examined the scene.

Detours were available for southbound traffic via Cobble Hill Road and for northbound traffic via Hutchinson Road East.
