Nine out of the 10 popular names chosen in 2022 were also chosen in 2023, according to the B.C. government.

For the second year in a row, Noah was the most popular name for babies born in B.C.

Noah was registered 205 times, followed by Oliver and Olivia (196 each), Theodore (188), and Liam (179), according to data from the Vital Statistics Agency.

Noah has been in the top five since 2019, while Olivia topped the list in 2010 with 302.

The list is based on the 37,650 babies who were registered as born in B.C. from Jan. 1 until Dec. 18, 2023. Only names that occur five or more times are included.

A look back at names popular 50 years ago shows how much tastes have changed.

Noah was just just a blip in 1973, appearing nine times. Six babies were named Oliver, and Olivia didn’t register at all.

Instead, there were hundreds of Michaels, Jasons and Davids, and Jennifers, Michelles and Lisas — Michael was registered 731 times and Jennifer 551.

Now, those names are near the bottom of the list: Michael appears only 50 times in 2023 and Jennifer just six.

You can search the database of names on the Vital Statistics website.
