New Mercedes goes up in flames as string of suspicious fires continues

The fire at the Three Point Motors dealership was within sight of what police determined was a suspicious fire at an unoccupied residence

A new Mercedes convertible was torched overnight Tuesday, the latest in a string of suspicious fires at the northern ends of Government and Douglas streets.

The fire at the Three Point Motors dealership at 2546 Government St. was within sight of what police determined was a suspicious fire at an unoccupied residence under renovation in July.

There were two other fires in June within blocks of the area that are considered arsons.

A June 16 fire destroyed Ricky’s Restaurant at the intersection of Douglas Street and Burnside Road, and a June 23 blaze, in the 2500-block of Government Street, caused significant damage to a vehicle at a car-rental business.

No one has been injured in the fires.

VicPD’s Major Crime Unit detectives are investigating the blazes.

The Mercedes that burned on Wednesday sustained heavy damage to the interior and engine. Vehicles on either side were scorched from the heat of the fire.

A row of new vehicles was surrounded by yellow police tape on Wednesday.

Police did not immediately respond to questions about whether the latest fire is linked to the three previous blazes.

In a news release last week, VicPD said there have not been any arrests made in the fires and the investigation remains active.

Anyone with information on any of the fires is asked to contact the VicPD Report Desk at 250-995-7654, extension 1.
