New chief to take helm of Saanich Fire Department

A long-serving member of Saanich’s fire department has stepped into the top job.

Mike Kaye, who has been with the department for 25 years, will assume the role of chief Feb. 1, succeeding current chief Mike Burgess.

Kaye, who started with the department in 1998, has served as communications officer, assistant deputy chief and most recently deputy chief of operations.

“As a Saanich resident and a long-time member of the Saanich fire department, I am enthusiastic about this opportunity and look forward to continuing to serve my community in this role,” said Kaye.

As chief, Kaye will will lead a team of 140 firefighters and staff across three stations.

“With extensive experience in fire services, coupled with his proven leadership capabilities, Chief Kaye is well equipped to lead our department into the future,” said Brent Reems, chief administration officer with Saanich.

Kaye holds a bachelor of science degree from the University of Victoria and a certificate in business analysis from the University of Toronto and is certified as an executive chief fire officer through the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs.
