No one was seriously injured Wednesday in a chain-reaction crash that saw a retirement-home bus run into a Nanaimo restaurant.

The driver lost control of his empty bus about 10:15 a.m., causing it to strike a vehicle in the intersection of Bowen Road and Dufferin Crescent before crashing into a McDonald’s restaurant.

“It appears the driver had some medical-distress issues,” said Nanaimo RCMP Const. Gary O’Brien. “He went through the intersection [on a red light] at Bowen and Dufferin, where he collided with another vehicle. That vehicle collided with a third vehicle.”

The bus took off most of the restaurant’s siding and some brick work. O’Brien said the building was evacuated and shut down so it could be checked for damage.

The 53-year-old bus driver and the 23-year-old driver of the first vehicle struck were taken to hospital for assessment. There were no passengers in the bus at the time.
