The mother of the baby hit by a car in Nanaimo on Tuesday said she’s grateful to the passersby who rescued the infant by lifting up the vehicle.
Shaleen Mann, 20, brought her daughter, Kahlan, home from the hospital on Wednesday, thankful the baby suffered only scrapes and bruises.
Mann was in a crosswalk on Terminal Avenue when a 21-year-old driver ran a red light, hitting the stroller. Six-month-old Kahlan was in a car seat, which became stuck under the vehicle.
“I was definitely shocked,” Mann said. “I was freaking out and I was trying to get to her as fast as I could.”
Mann said she could see that Kahlan had fallen out of the car seat, but couldn’t reach her. “I was just so worried about her.”
Several people lifted the front of the car and brought the baby to safety.
B.C. Ambulance paramedics took Kahlan to hospital.
“I am definitely so thankful that it wasn’t worse than that,” said Mann, who suffered a sprained ankle. “I’m so thankful and definitely appreciative that they did come over and help.”
