A 27-year-old man is in stable condition in hospital after being stabbed several time in the head Sunday morning.

Nanaimo RCMP Const. Gary O’Brien said police received a report about the stabbing at 9:30 a.m. He said officers arrived quickly and performed first aid before turning things over to ambulance paramedics.

“Those actions probably saved his life.”

It is believed the man had been sleeping or lying down on a bus bench near Port Place Mall when the stabbing happened, O’Brien said.

Police located the man a short distance away from that spot, and the suspect was also nearby, he said.

A 51-year-old woman is in custody but no formal charges have been laid. A knife was located.

O’Brien said police are following up on several theories about the incident.

“We haven’t been able to corroborate yet on what transpired which led to the stabbing,” he said. “There’s some ideas out there but we haven’t been able to pin them down.”
