A Nanaimo man was arrested late Saturday for drug trafficking after police found him with a safe containing $7,000 and almost two ounces of cocaine.

The arrest occurred at about 11 p.m. after the 21-year-old suspect left a house known for drug activity and monitored by plains-clothes RCMP. The man took a taxi to another home, returning shortly after with a small safe under his arm, said a news release from Nanaimo RCMP.

The officers pulled the taxi over at the intersection of Wakesiah Avenue and Second Street. After a short conversation with the man, he was arrested and searched. The man has been released on a promise to appear May 16 in Nanaimo provincial court.

Police are recommending charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.
