A Nanaimo man has been arrested after staff and bystanders in the Port Place Shopping Centre parking lot were reportedly threatened with a toy bow and arrow that appeared to have a hypodermic needle extending from it.

The man was also wielding a stick during the Monday incident, which began about 7 p.m., the report said.

The suspect fled when approached by police, who caught up to him after a short foot chase. A struggle followed and the man was taken into custody.

Adam Cajander, 32, was held in custody to await a judicial bail hearing and was formally charged on Tuesday with assaulting a police officer, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace, uttering threats and resisting arrest.

He has been remanded in custody until his next court appearance March 28.
