Charges have been laid against a 48-year-old man in connection with a shooting in Nanaimo on Monday.

Robert Allen Estes, of no fixed address, has been charged with attempted murder. He remains in police custody while waiting for his next court appearance on Aug. 11 in Nanaimo provincial court.

RCMP were called to the area of Northfield Road and Nanaimo Parkway near Nanaimo’s Visitor Information Centre on Monday after drivers reported seeing a man lying on the highway. Police said witnesses provided first aid until paramedics arrived.

The victim, a 43-year-old man, was taken to Nanaimo hospital and later airlifted to Victoria with life-threatening injuries.

It's believed both the victim and the suspect were living in a homeless encampment in the area.

Police using police dogs found a firearm late afternoon Tuesday near Northfield and Boxwood roads. It will undergo a forensic examination, RCMP said.
