RCMP and the coast guard were combing the land and sea around Mill Bay on Wednesday, searching for a Shawnigan Lake man.

“The search will go until the last tide at midnight [Wednesday],” said Const. Kevin Hopkinson with the Shawnigan Lake RCMP.

RCMP received a missing person report from the parents of the young man when he didn’t return home Wednesday afternoon. Hopkinson said the last time anyone heard from him was 5:30 a.m.

“We pinged his cellphone to an area in Mill Bay,” Hopkinson said. Police found the man’s baseball cap, shoes, wallet and cellphone tucked neatly near the boat ramp.

Patrols, including a canine unit, searched the surrounding area, including the marina, docks and boats. Search and rescue were called in late afternoon to comb the area around Saanich Inlet. At press time, there was no indication of the man’s whereabouts or condition.

The man’s name was not released. He is described as six-foot-three and 160 pounds, with blond hair. — Times Colonist
