Mayfair mall store clerk foils attempted robbery

A clerk at the Roots store in Mayfair Shopping Centre stood her ground and raised her voice Saturday to send a pair of would-be robbers running.

Victoria police were called to Mayfair about 1:40 p.m. after a man, about 25 years old, asked a female clerk if there was any money in the till. He showed no weapon and no note, said police spokesman Bowen Osoko.

A second male — described as being in his late teens — stayed near the doorway.

The older man came around the counter, demanded money and pushed his way to the cash register, where he began hitting buttons to try to open it.

The clerk started yelling for him to get away from the register. The man complied, but kept insisting she give him money.

Thanks to the clerk, he didn’t stay around too long.

“Basically, she just screamed him out of the store,” Osoko said.

The man joined his partner near the door, and they stood there for a moment, directly in front of a surveillance camera, before taking off.

“In this case, the clerk wasn’t injured,” Osoko said.

“It turned out well, but at the same time it’s important for people to put their personal safety ahead of any money in the till.”

The older suspect is described as five-foot-10 and slim with curly blonde hair. He was wearing a red sweater and Adidas shoes. He was accompanied by a younger male described as slim and wearing a green sweatshirt.
