The 75-year-old Victoria man found dead in the Gorge Waterway on Saturday has been identified as James Hay.

Police believe the man had Alzheimer's disease and may have fallen into the water. However, the cause of death has not been determined.

"Mr. Hay was known to be suffering from some cognitive impairments," said coroner Barb McLintock on Tuesday.

Hay's wife, Catherine, reportedly came home Saturday to find her husband was missing. After an hourlong search, Hay was found floating near the Gorge Pointe condominiums at 1085 Tillicum Rd.

"It's unclear how he ended up in the water," McLintock said. The B.C. Coroners Service is investigating.
