A Greater Victoria man has been charged with attempted murder after a stabbing at a party in Saanich on New Year’s Eve.

An unwanted guest showed up at a house party in the 3200-block of Cook Street, near Tolmie Avenue, and became belligerent, according to someone who knows the victim but did not want to be identified. After the intruder was asked to leave, he pulled out a knife and made death threats. When a guest tried to intervene, he stabbed him twice, in the side and lower back, police said.

Guests called police about 11:30 p.m. and officers rushed to the scene, said Saanich Staff Sgt. Jason Bland.

The suspect fled but a man was later arrested by Saanich and Victoria police officers.

The victim, a man in his early 30s, was taken to hospital with a punctured spleen and internal bleeding. He had emergency surgery and is recovering in the intensive-care unit.

Andrew Jeffrey McLean, 27, appeared in court Thursday, charged with attempted murder.
