A man was arrested and charged Sunday evening after firing at Nanaimo RCMP officers with a BB gun from behind a rock.
Nanaimo RCMP said they received a report around 6 p.m. that a man was walking with a long gun near a wooded area with a dog park, sports field and skateboard park between Schook and Dover Road.
When the first officer arrived, the man was sitting on a rock. He pointed his weapon directly at the officer’s patrol vehicle.
The officer drove a safe distance away before parking and taking a “tactical position behind the car.”
Police said the man then shot his weapon, and a BB pellet bounced off the patrol car and hit the officer in the leg. More officers arrived and the man reportedly hid behind the rock and continued firing at police. RCMP deployed police dog Luthor, who stopped the man long enough for him to be detained.
Police said they recovered a black air gun, a tin of BB pellets and a box of CO2 canisters at the scene.
Daniel Mcclintock, 35, was charged with mischief, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, failure to comply with release order and three counts of assaulting a peace officer with a weapon.
He is being held in custody.
“We come to work knowing that our training can keep us safe and secure in the knowledge that our fellow officers will have our backs,” said Const. Sherri Wade. “We feel fortunate that none of the officers involved were seriously injured.”
