Saanich police officers responding to a report of a domestic dispute Tuesday night ended up arresting a man who produced a knife and threatened to harm them.

It started when police were called to a Gorge Road West home about 7:40 p.m., where they were told that the man involved in the incident had already left.

The man was later located in a vehicle in Royal Oak, but sped off when officers approached, and they decided not to pursue him.

At about 10:25 p.m., police were notified that the man had returned to the home. They arrived to find that he was in his vehicle, and blocked him so he couldn’t leave.

When the man refused to get out of the vehicle, the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team was called in.

The man produced a knife while the team was en route and made threats before exiting the vehicle.

Police responded by shooting a round from a beanbag gun, which prompted the man to retreat to the vehicle.

After the emergency response team arrived, a conductive-energy weapon was used to subdue and arrest the man.

He was taken to hospital for assessment.
