A 45-year-old man has been charged in an Oct. 7 home invasion on Gabriola Island where a fire was set inside the residence.

Gabriola RCMP said the incident happened about 12:30 a.m. in a home on North Road. An intruder armed with an unspecified weapon broke in and was confronted by one of the owners.

Police said the intruder and fire caused significant damage, adding the man, who is not a Gabriola resident, appeared to be under the influence of drugs.

The two people in the home managed to make their way outside when police arrived. The Gabriola Volunteer Fire Department also responded and extinguished the fire.

The suspect was transported to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital via a Nanaimo Port Authority vessel, police said.

Nathan Macleod appeared in Nanaimo provincial court Oct. 12 and was charged with breaking-and-entering, arson, mischief over $5,000, two counts of possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and failing to comply with a probation order.

He was remanded in custody and made another court appearance Monday.
