Long wait times left commuters frustrated at weekend road construction on the Malahat on Saturday.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure advised drivers on the Malahat to plan for up to one hour of extra travel time, due to a combination of construction and heavy summertime traffic.

Construction and paving is underway between Goldstream Provincial Park and Shawnigan Lake Road, according to a ministry spokesman. It was scheduled to wrap up at 7 p.m.

There is no construction planned for Sunday.

The construction is part of the $8-million project to improve safety along the highway. All widening, paving and median barrier work is scheduled to be completed by July 20.

Motorists are advised to exercise extra caution around construction sites and observe speed limits.

Before setting out on a trip, drivers are advised to check drivebc.ca for updates.
