Malahat lanes at repair site now open continuously, oversized vehicles allowed

The Malahat repair site has been opened to continuous two-way traffic, including for oversized vehicles up to 3.8 metres (12.5 feet) wide.

Crews widened the lanes overnight Thursday to allow for the larger vehicles. They paved, adjusted barriers and installed centre-line markings, the Transportation Ministry said. “This supports the safe and efficient movement of goods between the south and north Island,” ministry said in a statement.

To allow for the widening work, that section of the Malahat was reduced to alternating single-lane traffic from 10 p.m. Thursday to 3 a.m. Friday.

The 4.3 kilometre section will continue to be a construction zone for several more months, and motorists can expect slower speeds and congestion.

A heavy rainfall on Nov. 14-15 led to flooding that washed out part of the highway in a section between Goldstream Park and one kilometre north of Langford.

The stretch was reduced to single-lane alternating traffic and was completely closed from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. until Nov. 19, when two-way traffic resumed.
