A capital region woman remained in hospital with life-threatening injuries Saturday night after she was trapped inside a vehicle that rolled onto its roof, ending up partially submerged in a gully in a metre of water.
Westshore RCMP were the first to arrive at the crash on Burnside Road West early Saturday morning but were unable to free the woman, whose head was underwater. She was unresponsive when emergency crews arrived.
Once firefighters were on the scene, they managed to help police officers roll the car onto its side, then cut the womans seatbelt and pull her to safety. She was taken to Victoria General Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The woman, whose name has not been released, was in the passenger seat. She was alone in the car when firefighters arrived.
The incident occurred just after midnight.
The vehicle was heading north on Burnside Road West near the Trans-Canada Highway when it went off the road, said Lt. Kent Galbraith of the View Royal Fire Department.
Tire tracks on the road indicate the vehicle was on the right-hand side of the two-lane stretch of road, just past the interchange that accesses the Trans-Canada Highway. A gully runs for several hundred metres along the road.
Police have arrested a teenager in connection with the crash. No charges had been laid as of Saturday night, but police said the teen was not driving the car that went off the road.
Another vehicle may have been involved in the crash, and police are still seeking anyone who may have been in the area when the car went off the road.
We cant say for sure if there were two vehicles involved, said Westshore RCMP Acting Sgt. Scott Braes. He later added: Theres a lot of unanswered questions at this time.
