Liberals name candidate in Nanaimo-North Cowichan

After missing the first week of the election campaign in Nanaimo-North Cowichan, the B.C. Liberals filled its last vacancy Friday by appointing a 32-year-old mortgage agent as candidate.

After missing the first week of the election campaign in Nanaimo-North Cowichan, the B.C. Liberals filled its last vacancy Friday by appointing a 32-year-old mortgage agent as candidate.

The Liberals announced that Amanda Jacobson, a mortgage broker from Ladysmith, would be formally nominated as the candidate on Tuesday.

The late start of the Liberals’ campaign means Jacobson has already missed one all-candidates meeting and will have only 21 days to campaign before voters head to the polls on May 14.

She could not be reached for comment on Friday.

Jacobson has a bachelor’s degree in political science, sociology and art history from the University of Alberta and has worked as a proofreader at the Edmonton Journal, the party said.

NDP incumbent Doug Routley, who is seeking a third term in office, said he had never heard of Jacobson before the Liberals announced her candidacy on Friday.

“We knew they’d come up with somebody, and we’re sure she’s a credible person who will work hard to represent her views,” Routley said.

“But we feel pretty confident that our record here is supportable.”

Jacobson is the last Liberal candidate to be named in the 2013 provincial election.

The party is now fielding a full slate in 85 B.C. ridings.

Also running in the riding are Conservative John Sherry and Green Mayo McDonough.
