The $54-million Highway 4 Kennedy Hill construction will remain open until Jan. 2, 2023, the Transportation Ministry said on Thursday. PROVINCE OF B.C.

There will be two-way traffic at the Kennedy Hill roadworks through the weekend.

There are no planned closures or delays through the $54-million Highway 4 Kennedy Hill construction site this weekend and it will remain open until Jan. 2, said the Transporation Ministry on Thursday.

Work to improve the 1.5-kilometre stretch skirting Kennedy Lake will resume in the New Year with a return to single-lane alternating traffic at all times until Jan. 12, with delays as long as 30 minutes.

Starting Jan. 13, there will be single-lane alternating traffic between 7 a.m. until 5 p.m., after which time it opens to two-way traffic through to the early morning.

The Pacific Rim Highway 4, including Kennedy Hill, is the only east-west corridor on Vancouver Island to the west coast communities of Ucluelet and Tofino, and the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve at Long Beach.

The Kennedy Hill section has been straightened and flattened to allow for better visibility and wider travel lanes and safer shoulders, the ministry said. The improvements are aimed at making the highway a more reliable road for residents, tourists and truckers.

Work toward a planned spring 2023 completion will include the installation of final rock-wall mesh attachments and safety railings, drainage infrastructure and the final stage of paving and pavement markings.

A new rest area, with washroom facilities and a lookout point, will be accessible for all vehicle types.

The ministry encourages motorists to visit DriveBC.ca for the most up-to-date information on road conditions or call 1 855-451-7152 to listen to the travel information hotline message, updated daily during construction.
