It’s a dog’s life: Animal group raising funds for injured canines

The dogs are in side-by-side kennels at the veterinary hospital after tangling with vehicles — and both are relying on donations to pay for surgery and metal plates in their shattered legs.

Victoria Adoptables took over responsibility for Jackson, a three-year-old coon hound, and Odin, a six-year-old long-haired pointer, after their owners were unable to pay for veterinary care.

“We sometimes get calls from emergency vet hospitals when a dog has been injured and the owner has turned the dog over to the hospital for either euthanization or to find a rescue organization to take on the veterinary costs,” said Carol Broad of Victoria Adoptables. “We try never to say no to these calls.”

The non-profit group emptied its emergency fund to come up with $4,500 to repair multiple fractures to Jackson’s back leg. Surgery is scheduled for today.

Then came the call about Odin, who had jumped out of the bushes and landed on a vehicle.

The cost will be about $4,500, even though Saanichton Village Veterinary Hospital is giving the organization a deal, Broad said.

The group is fundraising through Facebook and will sell hot dogs at Pets West in Broadmead on June 22, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Donations can also be made directly to the veterinary hospital at 7816 East Saanich Rd.

After about three months of rehabilitation in foster homes, Jackson and Odin will be put up for adoption.
