Vancouver Island is about to get cold.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the Island as the province gets hit with a spell of cold air.

Arctic air is forecast to hit B.C. overnight Friday, bringing a major shift in temperature from the current mild January.

The temperature is expected to be five to 10 degrees below normal over the south coast.

In Victoria, that means nighttime temperatures of -7 C and highs around 1 C. The lows in Duncan, Nanaimo, Port Alberni and the Comox area could drop to -6 C. Add in gusty winds, and it will feel even colder.

Temperatures are expected to gradually rise late next week. However, there remains significant uncertainty on the timing of a return to seasonal temperatures.
