West Shore RCMP are investigating how a 45-year-old woman ended up seriously injured and lying on the side of a dark, deserted road.

View Royal Fire Chief Paul Hurst said his wife Laurie spotted what looked like an arm waving out from a dark spot in the 3400 block of Wishart Road Sunday morning around 12:38 a.m. The couple were going home from a function, riding in a cab with Colwood councillor Gordie Logan and Colwood firefighter Tim Hamblin.

They told the cab driver to turn around and found the woman lying face down. Her face was covered in blood and her upper body was injured, Hurst said.

Hamblin started giving first aid while Hurst called 911. Mounties, firefighters from View Royal and Colwood and B.C. Ambulance paramedics arrived and the woman was taken to hospital.

The woman told the group she had been walking to her home in Colwood when she was hit by a car that left the scene. West Shore RCMP are still investigating whether that’s the case, which is why they waited several days before releasing information and calling for witnesses, said spokeswoman Const. Sarah Beckett.

She would not explain why officers have reason to doubt the woman’s version of events but said they are investigating all avenues.

“If information surfaces where there is doubt as to what police were initially told occurred, the police must look into this and ensure the information they act on and/or release to the public is fact, not assumption or speculation,” Beckett said.

The woman has been released from hospital and is recovering.

Anyone who saw a lone woman walking in the area of Wishart Road around midnight on Nov. 17 or has information about the incident can call West Shore RCMP at 250-474-2264 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
