A 51-year-old man has been taken to hospital in critical condition following a rescue on Hollyburn Mountain early Sunday.

Rescue crews were called out after the man fell down an embankment while snowshoeing at around 4 p.m. Saturday.

West Vancouver Police Staff Sgt. Tim Kravjanski said North Shore Search and Rescue went in to save the man, but a series of avalanches made the rescue tricky and dangerous.

Witnesses called emergency crews, and the man was able to text for help. He is believed to have suffered serious head injuries.

He was found in the Tony Baker Gully and, after treatment from a paramedic, was taken out via the Cypress Ski Area with a rope rescue raise system.
