Construction is underway on 35 new affordable housing rental units for Indigenous people in the Alberni Valley, with the $7.13-million project expected to be completed next year.

The four-storey wood-frame building will be owned and operated by Citaapi Mahtii Housing Society, primarily serving members of the Ahousaht First Nation with low and moderate incomes.

The property, located at 4210 Cedarwood St. in Port Alberni, will offer a range of housing sizes, from studios to four-bedroom units.

The smaller units are expected to appeal to individuals and seniors, while the larger units are suitable for families and intergenerational families.

“Housing is a critical issue for all people, especially Indigenous, in B.C.,” said Chief n̓aasʔałuk (John Rampanen) of the Ahousaht Nation. “Ahousaht is excited to initiate this housing project. Citaapi Mahtii will provide homes for many of our people and, more importantly, provide both a sense of home and a cultural hub for urban Indigenous people.”

The site includes a playground, outdoor gathering centre and cultural centre. The latter will be utilized for teachings, activities, events and celebrations.

The new housing development is within walking distance of a recreation centre and high school. Services and amenities, including public transit, parks, a public library, grocery stores and medical facilities, are also nearby.

B.C. Housing contributed $6.4 million toward the cost of the project, with the City of Port Alberni providing the land, valued at approximately $580,400.

The federal government, through Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, provided $150,000 in seed funding.
