A drunk driver who decided to bypass a fire truck blocking Inverness Road on Friday afternoon won’t be driving for 90 days.

Saanich police and fire were investigating a two-vehicle collision on Inverness Road at Glasgow Avenue just after 5:30 p.m., said Saanich police Staff Sgt. Scott Treble. A fire truck was parked sideways, blocking the both lanes on Inverness Road.

“The driver decided to drive his pickup truck to the right of the fire truck, up over the sidewalk and narrowly missing a couple of pedestrians,” Treble said. “Then, with the truck back on the roadway, he actually started accelerating, driving toward the collision scene we were cleaning up.”

The 40-year-old man failed a breath test and was given an immediate roadside prohibition.

“He put the bystanders, the firefighters and police in danger,” Treble said. “It’s quite a head-scratcher.” — Times Colonist
