Hunter rescued from remote North Island inlet

A hunter in medical distress on a remote north Island inlet was rescued by a a Royal Canadian Armed Forces Cormorant helicopter early this morning, said Capt. Trevor Reid from 19 Wing Comox.

The Coast Guard received the call a hunter was in distress from his companions late in the evening on May 31. They were located near Brooks Peninsula near Port Alice, accessible by ATV trails.

Reid did not disclose the nature of the hunter’s medical distress.

The helicopter crew flew through snow showers with limited visibility to reach the hunting party just after midnight.

“We had a latitude and longitude for the location, but the weather was very poor. Fortunately the hunting party set up a signal fire that we could see through our night vision goggles,” said Capt. Jeff Barth in a release. This was his first search and rescue mission as a newly graduated Cormorant pilot. 

The man in medical distress was hoisted into the helicopter and flown to Port Hardy to be taken to hospital by ambulance.

His condition and residence are unknown.
