Christmas Island sounds like a festive place. Human-rights groups have another name for it: Australia's Guantanamo Bay. The remote territory's mandatory-detention centre, fenced with barbed wire, is the first stop for waves of asylum seekers arriving by boat. It has been rocked by angry riots, protests and hunger strikes.
