Heritage building on Government Street damaged by fire

The Victoria Fire Department was called to the fire at 2531 Government St. just before 11 p.m. Sunday and arrived at the scene to “towering flames”

Investigators are looking into the cause of a fire Sunday night that damaged a heritage building on Government Street.

The Victoria Fire Department was called to the fire at 2531 Government St. just before 11 p.m. and arrived at the scene to “towering flames shooting vertically into the still, windless July night sky,” the department said in an Instagram post.

Photos show the building engulfed in flames at night and charred in the daylight.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze but continued to watch the building overnight until it could be handed over to the investigations division.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

The heritage building is about a block from Ricky’s All Day Grill at Douglas and Burnside Road, which was gutted in mid-June by a fire that has been deemed arson.

“This area of Victoria has definitely been through the wringer,” the fire department said.

The heritage building was under renovation and was occupied at the time of the fire.
