Shawnigan Lake RCMP say they have seen a jump in cases of graffiti and incidents of mischief over the past month, including one in which a road was blocked using picnic tables and chairs.

There have been six reports of graffiti that have included hate speech and vulgar images. Street signs have been tampered with, as well.

Surveillance video is being reviewed to try to identify suspects in the road-blocking incident, police said.

Overall damage from the recent incidents is estimated to be over $500.

“With the nicer weather that comes along in the spring and summer months, we anticipate that there will be more people enjoying the village and lakefront areas later in the evening,” said Const. Jill Woodley. “Our hope is that everyone can do their part to keep our village clean and be respectful of the local businesses.”

Shawnigan Lake RCMP asks anyone with information about the incidents to call them at 250-743-5514.
