A freezer fire at a grocery store in Cordova Bay has closed the store for the day.

Tru Value Foods in Cordova Bay is closed today after a freezer caught fire this morning, causing smoke damage throughout the store.

Saanich Fire battalion chief Gary Stark said firefighters were called to the store at 5124 Cordova Bay Rd. at about 10:15 a.m.

The freezer unit was on fire and a chemical extinguisher was used to put it out within a few minutes. Stark said the cause of the fire is under investigation.

“It looks electrical at this time but our investigators are on scene to determine that,” he said.

The smoke from the fire damaged a significant amount of food in the store, which had to be thrown out. Three staff members were treated for minor smoke inhalation.

Stark said damage caused by the fire, including damage, loss of food and business, is estimated to be around $25,000.
