Drivers be warned. School speed zones are back in effect this morning, and Greater Victoria police officers will be on the streets to remind you of it.

“Our full contingent of traffic officers will be out,” said Victoria Police spokesman Mike Russell. “We’ll be out looking for speeders but also distracted drivers and drivers on their cellphones.”

Russell said officers and crime watch volunteers will welcome kids back to school this week, setting up speed reader boards to remind drivers to slow down. “As the week goes on, there will be more ticketing,” said.

School zones are in effect from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. while playground zones are dawn to dusk.

The speed limit is generally 30 kilometres per hour. Fines for breaking the speed limit range from about $200 to $500.
