Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, of the Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs, is recovering in hospital after his Chevy Tahoe slid and flipped on black ice outside Hope on Valentine’s Day.

“He’s in good spirits. He’s a warrior,” said UBCIC vice-president Bob Chamberlain. He said Phillip was returning home to Penticton when the crash happened and that he suffered a few broken bones.

Phillip was in Victoria the day before the accident for the Moosehide Campaign demonstration at the legislature to end violence against aboriginal women and children.

Chamberlain said Phillip often travels by car for work and put nearly 600,000 kilometres on his current vehicle. He was helped by passersby and local ambulance attendants after the crash. He was later transferred to Penticton Regional Hospital to be near his family while he recovers.

“He won’t be on the sidelines for long,” Chamberlain said.
