A man was arrested Sunday in connection with multiple stabbings of two women Saturday on Saltspring Island.

Two girls, 3 and 5, were medevaced to hospital in serious condition on Tuesday after a crash on Saltspring Island.

The children and their mother were in a northbound Volkswagen Jetta that collided with a southbound GMC Savana van about 2:30 p.m. on Fulford-Ganges Road.

The three-year-old girl was taken to B.C. Children’s Hospital in Vancouver, said Cpl. Darren Lagan of Vancouver Island RCMP in a statement. The older child was taken to Victoria General Hospital. The girls’ 36-year-old mother had less serious injuries and was being treated at Lady Minto Hospital on Saltspring.

The 43-year-old male driver of the van did not suffer serious injuries.

While the cause of the crash is still under investigation, it appears that the rear end of the car hit the front end of the van, Lagan said.
