Striking librarians are planning to have picket lines up Saturday at the Cumberland, South Cowichan, Nanaimo Harbourfront and Parksville branches of the Vancouver Island Regional Library.

No new offer has come in and no talks are planned, the B.C. General Employees’ Union said in a statement Friday. The BCGEU represents 48 librarian in the system.

Job action started with rotating strikes, but that escalated this week when all the librarians in the system walked off the job.

On Friday, pickets went up outside the Cowichan Lake, Port Alberni, Chemainus and Courtenay branches.

When librarians are picketing, VIRL employees belonging to the Canadian Union of Public Employees do not cross the line, so those branches remain closed.

If there are no pickets, branches are open with reduced services.

The employer and union cannot agree on a wage settlement. Their previous collective agreement expired in December 2020.
