Victoria police detained four people Monday after multiple shots were fired on Constance Avenue about 1:45 a.m. in what appears to be a targeted incident.

A decision on possible charges was expected today.

No one was hurt, and Victoria police said there does not appear to be any ongoing danger to the public.

“We’re pretty sure, in the group of four, we have everyone involved — suspects and victims. It’s just a matter of getting [who’s who] sorted,” Victoria police spokesman Bowen Osoko said.

Victoria police would not say or had not yet determined who or what was the target of the shooting, which took place on Constance between Esquimalt Road and Lyall Street in Esquimalt.

An area resident said his vehicle had a tire shot out but was otherwise not damaged. He said he was awakened by the sound of gunfire early in the morning. The noise prompted residents to call 911.

A Victoria police officer arrived on the scene Monday morning little more than one minute after the first call, police said. The Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team also attended.

Police would not reveal the gender of the people involved or their relationship to one another. They believe one weapon, a handgun, was involved in the shooting and that at least two vehicles were hit.

Shell casings and rounds were located. During the morning, officers were working behind police tape outside a complex at 519 Constance Ave., close to a black truck. There is no indication whether the complex or the truck are connected to the case.

Another person in the area said police wrapped up a little before noon after spending hours combing for evidence. Two other residents said they heard nothing during the night, while another said he heard five or six shots.

None of the neighbours wanted to be identified. All expressed relief that there were no injuries.
