A union representing B.C. forestry workers reported “with great sadness” that a worker died Friday morning at a dryland log-sorting facility near Gold River.

The United Steelworkers Local 1-1937 said the fatal incident took place at the Nesook Bay sorting yard on western Vancouver Island.

The union said the “tragic incident” is being investigated by the RCMP, WorkSafeBC, the employer and union representatives.

“Our union’s thoughts are with the family, friends and co-workers of the deceased member at this time, to whom we offer our deepest condolences,” said a statement from USW 1-1973 president Brian Butler.

He said no other information is being disclosed “out of respect for the family,” but more details might be available on Monday.
