An apartment building was evacuated but no one was injured after a fire started inside a second-storey suite Saturday afternoon.

Several people called 911 around 2 p.m. to report a fire in a suite at 850 Rupert Terr., near Quadra Street and Fairfield Road. When firefighters arrived, smoke was pouring out the window, said battalion chief Dave Bicknell.

The tenant was not home and told firefighters he watched fire trucks stream by while he was shopping for groceries. He was shocked to see his own suite was the target, Bicknell said. The building was evacuated and the blaze was quickly knocked down.

The fire started in the kitchen area and caused about $50,000 in damage. What caused the blaze it is still under investigation, Bicknell said.

Everyone was able to return to their homes except for the occupant of the second-storey suite.
