Fire inspectors are investigating the cause of a fire in a vacant home in Colwood that saw one firefighter sustain minor injuries.

The fire in the 400-block of Goldstream Avenue, between Kristina Place and Whitehead Place, the last house on the border of Colwood and Langford, was reported at 5:42 a.m., said Colwood Fire Chief Bryan Erwin.

Fire departments from Langford, Colwood and View Royal responded.

Crews arrived to find the structure in flames with heavy smoke.

During the course of extinguishing the blaze, a firefighter fell through the main floor into a basement crawlspace.

The member was treated for what Erwin described as “minor injuries.”

“They are OK now,” he said, adding that the injury is a reminder of the “heightened risk” first-responders face at every incident they attend.

Erwin said the cause of the fire is unclear.

He said the property is under development and the structure that was ablaze was soon to be demolished.

“Right now the scene has been moved into the investigation stage,” he said.

Vehicle traffic was closed for about 90 minutes until about 7 a.m.

B.C. Transit said it re-routed buses around the scene for a short time.
