Nanaimo RCMP said the home has been a source of concern for the neighbourhood for some time due to illegal squatting and drug use.

Nanaimo RCMP are investigating a suspicious fire south of the city early Sunday in a house police say was known for drug use and squatting.

Two people reportedly ran off just after the fire was discovered, about 5 a.m. in the 1900-block of Stannard Drive.

Reserve Const. Gary O’Brien said the home has been a source of concern for the neighbourhood for some time due to illegal squatting and drug use.

Police said the house filled with smoke but the blaze was extinguished before any significant damage was done.

The two occupants were not injured, and the house was secured for the remainder of the day to allow fire inspectors to examine the scene.

Call the Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 with any information.
