A fire broke out on the container ship Zim Kingston on Tuesday while it was docked at the Port of Nanaimo’s Duke Point.

The fire was discovered just after 1 p.m. and was extinguished after about 90 minutes by the ship’s crew and salvage workers, port officials told CHEK News.

A boom was placed around the ship during the fire.

No one was reported injured and investigators are looking for the cause of the fire

Zim Kingston is docked at Nanaimo to remove damaged containers.

It lost at least 109 containers into the sea in rough weather off the west coast of Vancouver Island in late October. Then, while anchored off Victoria, some of its containers caught fire.

It took several days to put out the fire.

The ship remained off Victoria until early December, when it sailed under tug escort to the Port of Nanaimo to have damaged containers removed. About 60 containers have been identified for salvage.

What happens next with the ship and its cargo has not been announced.
