A Fairfield street was closed Monday night with police and fire officials on the scene after potential hazardous materials were discovered in a multi-unit building.

The Victoria police and fire departments closed off streets around the 400-block of Chester Avenue, which runs between Hilda and Oscar streets parallel to Cook Street.

Police and members of the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team went to the building Monday afternoon as they tried to locate a suspect in an aggravated assault investigation.

Upon entering the unit, police said, they discovered potentially hazardous materials. “Out of an abundance of caution,” they evacuated nearby units and called for assistance from the Victoria Fire Department.

Roads in the area were closed to traffic and a safety perimeter was established. Teams are trying to evaluate and mitigate any risk to the public.

Roads in the area were closed into the evening.
