Early morning car crash injures two in rural Saanich

Police are still investigating the crash but have ruled out alcohol and other substances as a contributing factor

Police are considering charges under the Motor Vehicle Act for a young driver who crashed into a tree during an early morning Saturday drive in rural Saanich.

Saanich police Sgt. Damien Kowalewich said that officers arrived at a crash scene off the 5900-block of Old West Saanich Road around 1 a.m. and found two 18-year-old males in the back of an ambulance after they crashed a vehicle into a tree and downed a power line.

B.C. Hydro and Saanich public works had to be called in to help repair and clean up the scene.

The black Chevy Cobalt that the two teens were in sustained extensive damage and the airbags were deployed, Kowalewich said.

“The driver and passenger are very fortunate to not have significant injuries,” he said.

Saanich’s traffic safety unit is still investigating, but alcohol and other substances have been ruled out as a contributing factor, Kowalewich said.

The driver and the passenger were transported to hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
